This day hike starts out with an early morning departure from your hotel of choice in Flagstaff, AZ. We will arrive with a variety of snacks, muffins, cinnamon rolls and drinks for our ride through the Navajo Reservation north to Antelope Canyon, one of the most famous Slot Canyons in the United States. You will have a short restroom break and also a shopping break at one of the oldest trading posts in the Southwest, the Cameron Trading Post. This is the most photographed slot canyon in the world! You will have a short restroom break and also a shopping break at one of the oldest trading posts in the Southwest, the Cameron Trading Post.

From there you will continue north until we reach Antelope Canyon. Antelope Canyon is located on the Navajo Reservation where we will be accompanied by a Navajo Guide provided with entry. There are two Antelope Canyons; we prefer the Lower Antelope Canyon which is less crowded and we will get deeper and deeper in the Canyon as we descend the staircases. Here we will spend an hour within the slot canyon that is famous for its’ light beams and narrow walls. Here we will spend an hour within the slot canyon that is famous for its’ light beams and narrow walls. The hike within Antelope Canyon is less than a quarter-mile one way with no elevation gain or loss. The photos provided will explain what the canyon looks like, but it will not give you the true feel and beauty that is held within this canyon. After the hike in Antelope Canyon we will have a stop with a three-quarter mile hike one-way for a spectacular view of the Colorado River at Horseshoe Bend.

Following the hike back from Horseshoe Bend you will have a cold-cut lunch, fresh fruit and refreshing drinks. Next you will stop at some spectacular Dinosaur Tracks over 200 million years old within the Moenave Formation. From here you will also have another restroom break at the Cameron Trading Post. This will also give you another chance to buy the beautiful Navajo rug or that incredible horsehair pottery piece that you talked yourself out of on the way to Antelope Canyon.

Walkabout Adventures looks forward to providing you with this spectacular day trip giving you the chance to see the Southwest as the Locals do.

It is a town that at one time was the 4th largest community in Arizona and then fell to the bottom of the list when the copper mines closed. The community sits on the top of Cleopatra Hill at 5,200 feet. Where it once had a population of 15,00, in the 1920′s, it has just 450 people.

The community was incorporated in 1899 following four disastrous fires that destroyed large sections of what was once known as "the wickedest town in the west." This copper mining camp was filled with tents and roudy men but grew to a real town as the prosperity of the community grew. The mining rights belong to Phelps Dodge who closed the mine in 1953. Since there weren’t mines to work the community that was left, not many by the way, gathered together and promoted the town as a historic ghost town. 1967 saw Jerome designatged a National Historic District by the federal government. The community has grown to be a thriving tourist and artist community bringing the population from 353 in 2007 to the 450 today.

What will you see if you go to Jerome? You will be able to see the works of some emerging artists, craft people, musicians, writers and more. You will find hermits, bed and breakfast owners who will welcome you to their establishments and museum caretakers that have great pride in the museums of the area.

The views from the community are stunning, a photographers dream. The opportunity to see buildings that are like the buildings that were built after the fires of 1894 and 1899. Some of the buildings are still in need of restoration, but they are being worked on and those that have been restored offer a world of lessons of the past. You may want to visit "Cribs District" which is an area across the street from the English Kitchen, in a back alley wehre all the buildings were part of Jerome’s ill-famed "prositution row." Not uncommon for communities in the mining world or gold rush era to have houses of prositution growing in the area.

Vist Douglas Mansion/State Park while you are in the area. The mansion is equipped with a wine cellar, billiard room , steam heat and was built from adobe bricks made on site. The Mansion is a museum which exhibits photgraphs, artifacts, minerals and videos.

You may also want to see th Jerome Historical Society Mine Museum where there are more photographs, equipment and ore samples.

In this area of the state, which was settled by Mormon John D. Lee, there stands a trading post built in 1913 and a stone fort built in 1874. They are still standing to allow visitors to see what life would have been like in that time of unrest between the Navajo and the settlers. The trading post has the small fortified windows (gun ports) on the right side of the building to protect it from attacks.

Lees Ferry was the first ferry crossing on the Colorado River for 260 miles prior to the building of the Navajo and Glen Canyon Bridges which were built in the 20th century. Everyplace else along the Colorado River is all limestone cliffs and sandstone from Moab, Utah to Laughlin, Nevada which made it impossible to ford.

You can see glimpses of the early Mormon pioneer and subsequent mining lifestyles while following the interpretive trails through the town, along the Colorado River and at the Lonely dell Ranch in adjacent Paria River Valley.

Probably the most impressive claim to fame for the community is that the Grand Canyon officially begins here. The light band of limestone angling out above the water is the Kaibab formation, the upper layer at the rim of the Grand Canyon gorge. The Kaibab Formation becomes visible here, 3,000 feet above sea level, and climbs to 8500 feet at the North Rim of Grand Canyon, 90 river miles away.

In 1927 the need for Lees Ferry ended with the completion (1928) of the Navajo Bridge across Marble Canyon. There is a newer bridge replacing the original one and parallels the old spanning over 843 feet of the gorge at a height of 467 feet. If you don’t want to cross here, the next opportunity to cross the Colorado River west of Lees Ferry is Boulder Dam, many miles below the Grand Canyon.

If you are planning a rafting trip through the Grand Canyon you will probably begin your adventure in Lees Ferry. You will need a permit which you should get a year or more in advance. There are numerous commercial enterprises offering rafting packages so you cam go that route too.

Lees Ferry offers a ranger station, campground, launch ramp, courtesy dock, fish-cleaning station and access to 15 miles of the Colorado River (upriver only). A restaurant, service station, post office and store are available at the town of Marble Canyon on Highway 89A, 3.5 miles south of Lees Ferry.

Lees Ferry is located just below the Utah state line in the central northern section of Arizona on Hwy 89.

Explore Lake Mead National Recreation Area. If you love spending time in the outdoors, Lake Mead National Recreation Area is an outstanding destination in Arizona. This huge Park starts at the mouth of the Grand Canyon, then extends along the Arizona-Nevada border for 140 miles. The Recreation Area contains both Lake Mead and Lake Mohave, and both present opportunities to enjoy your favorite water sports and much more.

Lake Mead is 110 miles long and 500 feet at its greatest depth. This expansive lake features 550 miles of shoreline and 255 square miles of surface. Canoeing, kayaking, boating, fishing and waterskiing are popular activities on Lake Mead.

The shores of Lake Mead feature marinas, campgrounds, lodges and other facilities, so there is plenty to entertain visitors both on and off the water. Millions of people visit Lake Mead National Recreation Area each year to enjoy backcountry camping, hiking, biking, horseback riding and wildlife viewing. Picnicking, scenic driving and hunting are other outdoor activities you can pursue at Lake Mead.

Although Lake Mead and Lake Mojave comprise a large portion of the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, there is much more to the Park than water. The lakes stand in contrast to the mountains, canyons and stark desert landscape also contained within the Park. The variety of experiences you can have at Lake Mead is one of its most unique and appealing features.

The varied habitats at Lake Mead National Recreation Area support a diversity of plants and animals you may encounter on your visit. Nearly 250 kinds of birds have been spotted here, and you may also see bats and a large assortment of snakes and other reptiles on your visit. The desert supports a variety of beautiful flowers that bloom at different times throughout much of the year.

If you would like to learn more about the various habitats, geology and ecology of Lake Mead National Recreation Area, visit the Alan Bible Visitor Center just east of Boulder City in Nevada. Information, books, maps and intriguing exhibits are available here, and Park staff members can provide assistance and additional information, as well.

To make the most of your visit to Lake Mead National Recreation Area, do some planning ahead of time. You can obtain a tremendous amount of information about the various campgrounds, hiking trails, marinas and other attractions and facilities at the National Park Service website, NPS.gov. Search for Lake Mead to access relevant web pages.

Boulder City in Nevada is perhaps the best location for enjoying Lake Mead. You can find several hotel options in Boulder City at HotelsCombined.com.

Bedrock City Dinosaurs – Valle, Arizona

Want to get up close and personal to a dinosaur? At Bedrock City, halfway between the Grand Canyon and Williams, you have the opportunity to do just that. Here you will see Fred and Barney, Wilma and Betty along with Pebbles and Bamm Bamm from the Flintstones cartoons as well as the giant dinosaur that you can slide down the tail, like a slide, just like Fred on the intro to the cartoon. This unique stop is located between the Grand Canyon and Williams on Arizona Hwy 54 at the junction of US 180 in Valle. Created to look like Fred, Barney, Wilma, Betty, Pebbles and Bamm Bamm from the Flintstones cartoons they will bring a smile to your face, regardless of whether you are still a kid or just remembering how the Flintstones made you laugh. The statues are stationary, they are huge and they are fun.

Do you want to see a volcano without worrying about it going off? Well, you can at this spot with the made volcano, there is a man-made hatching pterodactyl, man-made Fred and Barney cars and Goatasauruses (these are real goats).

The whole area is created in the Flintstone tradition, right down to Fred and Barney’s houses and the policeman’s house. Both Fred and Barney have three-room houses for you to see complete with the TV and phone in Barney’s house and the bird-beak-needle phonographs at Fred’s house.

There is a camp ground here along with Fred’s Diner so you can stop for the night, enjoy the Flintstones and get something to eat, not a bad deal for just $4.50!

Just a little something rather different on your trip from the Grand Canyon and all it’s beauty, kind of fun to have something as silly as this place to relax and enjoy.

The Wild Burros (and More) of Oatman – Oatman, Arizona

Are you looking for something different to do? Do you enjoy the unusual? Then you will want to visit the small community of Oatman. Oatman was a gold mining town until the 1930′s. At that time there were nearly 10,000 people living in the town, today there are must 150. The town is just 4 blocks long but filled with Old West charm which attracts nearly 500,000 visitors per year!

The community was founded around 1906 and is hidden in the desert of the Black Mountains approximately 28 miles from Kingman on Route 66. It is the community that had Clark Gable and Carole Lombard as guest on their wedding night.

The building of I-40 was the demise of Oatmans population in 1951. It appeared that the community, then down to just 25 people, would not survive but it did due once again to the re-emergence of the mine and the movie "How the West Was Won" which was filmed here in 1962. There are tours given of the Goldroad Mine which was opened originally in 1900 after Jerez’s discovery of gold.

There are also the wild burrows that still wander through the streets of the town. The animals are the descendants of the domesticated donkeys that worked the mines in 1942. There are enough burros that when there aren’t a lot of visitors in town the four-legged creatures almost outnumber the two-legged ones. Here you can see burros walking down the street like they own it (which they may). You can feed the burros which is something that will leave a pleasant smile on your face when you get home, how many of your friends can say they have fed a wild burro?

Walk down the plank sidewalk; tour the saloons of which many contain their original storefronts. Enjoy a night at the Oatman Hotel which was built in 1902 and refurbished in 1924. The hotel is listed on the National Historic Building Registry with its 10 rooms and a donation of just $35 a night. The room called the Clark Gable room costs a donation of $55.

Enjoy the gunfights in the street, visit the Outlaw Willie’s Gold Mine Emporium and enjoy the taste of the real Old West in this friendly, little bitty community.

Directions: Oatman is 211 miles northwest of Phones. Take US 93 to Kingman, then go southwest on Historic Route 66 (Oatman Road).

Tours: Tour the Gold Road Mine (departs every 30 minutes). Call for ticket prices: 928-768-1600.

You will need to bring your own bag of carrots to feed the burros. Watch the gunfights in the street on weekends and ask the locals about Oddie.

Phone: Chamber of Commerce 928-768-6222 or Visitor Information: 928-524-3048.

Visitors to Lake Powell in Arizona are often amazed by the sheer size of the man made body of water. Over one hundred and eighty six miles long, the lake offers over ninety canyons to explore and endless hours of water activities and fun.

Begun in 1956 the nation’s second largest reservoir had reached its high water mark by June of 1980. It is situated in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, designated in 1972 "to provide for public use and enjoyment and to preserve the area’s scientific, historic, and scenic features."

Lake Powell is also the working storage facility for the Colorado River Compact’s Upper Basin states. This means that Arizona, Nevada and California receive a significant amount of annual flow out of the reservoir.

While the largest portion of Lake Powell resides in Utah, the dam that controls the level of the lake is in Arizona. The Glen Canyon Dam is a whopping seven hundred and ten feet high. It contains well over four million yards of concrete and stands over five hundred feet above the Colorado River. It houses a hydroelectric power plant that delivers over six hundred thousand households worth of power.

In addition to the dam, in 1964 the Glen Canyon Dam bridge was built, and the one thousand five hundred and sixty food span has eliminated the traditional one hundred and ninety two mile drive that would have been required to reach the other side of the canyon prior to the bridge’s construction.

Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon National Recreational Area are incredibly popular sites for tourist activity. There are houseboats and personal watercraft rentals available along the thousands of miles of shore, and most of the canyons and scenic locations are only reachable by a watercraft of one kind or another. There are also excellent bass, carp and catfish fishing opportunities, and many trained guides who will take visitors to the prime locations.

Many visitors to Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon National Recreational Area come for the beautiful scenery with the contrasting colors of the sandstone cliffs and cloudless blue skies, all reflected in the seemingly endless waters of the Lake. Many also enjoy the remoteness and the peace and quiet of the many areas of the lake.

The best time of year to enjoy Lake Powell and the Glen Canyon National Recreational Areas are June through October, when the waters are warm and the air temperatures are comfortable.

Historical buildings and other attractions

There are a lot of historical buildings you can visit along the South Rim and most of them are located in the Grand Canyon Village. Some of these buildings include Buckey O’Neill Cabin, the El Tovar Hotel and the Grand Canyon Railway Depot.

Buckey O’Neill Cabin is considered as the longest continually standing structure located in the South Rim. It was built by William Owen O’Neill during the 1890s. Presently, the cabin is used as a guest house for vacationers who want to visit the Grand Canyon.

The El Tovar Hotel, on the other hand, is considered as South Rim’s most luxurious lodge. This 4 story hotel was constructed in 1905 and was planned by Charles Whittlesley. Located inside the hotel is a restaurant and a gift shop.

Of the fourteen train stations ever built in the United States, the Grand Canyon Railway Depot is one of only three log-cabin-style railway depot existing today. It was constructed in 1909.

Other attractions include Lipan Point and Toroweap Overlook. Lipan Point is a promontory or headland situated on the South Rim. By visiting in this place, you can have a great view of the Unkar Creek area in the inner canyon as well as the various rock strata in the area. Toroweap Overlook or Tuweep provides the most heart-stooping view of the canyon below. It is located 3,000 feet above the Colorado River. According to the National Park Service, this is the most remote in the country.

Recreational activities you can engage to

Other options you can do to have a more leisurely view of the canyon is through the Coconino Canyon Train, which is a ninety-minute train ride that start at the old Grand Canyon Depot in the Grand Canyon National Park and passes through 24 miles of the canyon’s landscape.

If you’re the more adventurous type, you can view the canyon in a more vertical perspective by going on board a small airplane or a helicopter. However, some scenic flights are not permitted if they fly within the 1,500 feet of the rim due to recent incidence of crash.

Aside from the usual sightseeing of the Grand Canyon, you can do a lot of recreational activities. Among the popular activities are hiking, running, whitewater rafting and camping. While you’re at the floor of the valley you can traverse it on the back of a mule, by foot or by raft from upriver.

Truly, the Grand Canyon is an impressive and must visited tourist attraction. If you haven’t visited the place yet, then it is about time for you to experience the excitement and the adventure of a lifetime.

There are so many tourist attractions in the world, some are man-made like monuments, museums and other architectural wonders while majority are naturally-made such as mountains, lakes, falls, gorges and other natural wonders.

In the United States, many of its natural wonders such as the Niagara Falls, Old Faithful Geyser, The Everglades, the Rocky Mountains and many more are visited by a lot of vacationers the whole year round. But there’s one natural wonder that is considered as one of the greatest tourist attractions in America and that is the Grand Canyon, which attracted approximately 5 million tourists every year.

A brief description of the Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is considered as a steep-sided gorge located in the state of Arizona. The canyon was created by the Colorado River over a period of 17 million year time span due to the natural process of erosions. It is situated within the Grand Canyon National Park, which is one of the first national parks in the country.

The canyon is 446 km (277 miles) long, which attains a depth of more than 1.6 km and ranges in width from 6.4 to 29 km (4 to 18 miles).

The rock layers that are exposed in the canyon are like pages of a great story book, nearly 2 billion years of the Earth’s history. While the Colorado Plateau was uplifting, the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their conduit through stratum upon stratum of rock.

The canyon was inhabited by Native Americans and built their homes within the canyon and its various caves. The Pueblo people also made settlement in the canyon and considered it as a holy site. They even made pilgrimage on the canyon.

It is not the deepest canyon, however, it is known for its awe-inspiring size and its colorful and intricate landscape. It is even unrivaled throughout the world for the panorama it offers to vacationers on the rim.

Tour the Honanki Heritage Site Near Sedona

The Honanki Heritage Site is a fascinating area to visit if you are interested in ancient cultures. The Site is located near Sedona in north-central Arizona in an scenic and picturesque area. Honanki is one of the best preserved examples of Sinagua architecture and rock art in the West.

Honanki was originally occupied by the Sinagua from 1130 AD to 1280 AD. The Sinagua are ancestors of the Hopi people, and Honanki is considered a sacred site by their Native American descendants.

During their occupation of Honanki, the cliff dwellings contained some 60 rooms and featured an undetermined amount of rock art drawings. The Sinagua cooked, slept and crafted tools at their home here. They hunted deer, rabbit and other wildlife, gathered edible plants and even raised crops in the surrounding area.

Today the Honanki Heritage Site is managed by the U.S. Forest Service. It is open to public tours daily in accordance with the Red Rock Pass Program. You can access the Site by driving there along Forest Road 525, which is usually always passable, or by parking and hiking in during wet conditions. If you have a 4 wheel drive or high clearance vehicle, you may also access the Site from an alternate, scenic route via Boynton Pass Road. This route provides views of Sedona’s Red Rocks. You may also visit Honanki during a jeep tour arranged at Sedona.

When you arrive at Honanki, you will need to stop by the information booth to sign in so the Forest Service can monitor Site usage. The volunteer staffing the booth will provide you with information about proper Honanki etiquette as well as advice about rattlesnakes you may encounter during the summer. You can then explore the accessible areas of Honanki Site on your own.

You will start out on a trail through a pinon-juniper forest that leads to the Honanki site. One of the first things you will notice when you get to the site is how high up some of the rock art is on the cliffs. It is difficult to imagine how the artists reached these heights, or why they felt they need to do so. Although much of the cliff dwelling area of Honanki is closed to the public, you can climb up to the impressive alcove to get a sense of how large the dwelling once was.

You’ll see more rooms as you travel further along the trail at the Site, and additional rock art images including depictions of humans. One image you will see is the round “shield” – a common, but mysterious Sinagua symbol. No one knows for sure what these symbols meant to the ancient Sinagua.

After touring the Site and viewing the ruins at Honanki, you’ll be left with a sense of how vibrant and populated the area once was. Honanki provides visitors with a rare opportunity to see an intriguing cliff dwelling and beautiful rock art, but it also allows provides a glimpse of what life must have been like here in the 12th and early 13th centuries.

Nothing is like the Grand Canyon, nothing in the world! This canyon is a true gift that transcends what we experience with its beauty and size. Unless you visit the canyon you truly can’t envision the size of it. You look out over the canyon and know that its timelessness provokes a comparison to our short existence. In its vast spaces you may find solace from hectic lives.

The South Rim is open 365 days a year. Visitor services and facilities are open and available every day of the year including holidays.

Most visitors go to the South Rim. Expect lots of people and traffic congestion and parking problems, particularly during the summer. The least crowded time is November through February but keep in mind that winter weather is a major consideration when planning a trip during these months.

The South Rim of the Grand Canyon averages 7000 feet above sea level. Visitors with respiratory or heart problems may experience difficulties. Walking at this elevation can be strenuous for everyone.

There are many overlooks accessible by car that offers spectacular views of the canyon. Desert View drive (Hwy 64) follows the canyon rim for 26 miles east of Grand Canyon Village to Desert View – the east entrance to the park. Desert View Drive is open to private vehicles throughout the year, but the park runs a free shuttle bus to provide transportation to the overlooks and is MUCH less stressful than driving yourself. Besides, riding the shuttle means that everyone gets to see instead on the driver missing all the beauty!

A hiking trail, knows as the Rim Trail, follows the rim from Pipe Creek Vista to Hermits Rest. The section of the Rim Trail between Pipe Creek Vista and Maricopa Point is paved, and mostly wheelchair accessible. Unpaved portions of the trail, between Maricopa Point and Hermits Rest are arrow and close to the edge. Bicycles are NOT permitted on the Rim Trial.

Yavapai Observation Station at Yavapai Point offers panoramic views of the canyon, including the Colorado River and Phantom Ranch.

For viewing or photographing the canyon, the best light is early or late in the day.

The Colorado River flows along the bottom of the canyon, 5000 ft below the rim. Because of the enormous depth of Grand Canyon, the river is visible only from certain viewpoints. It is a 2 day hike to the river and back from the South Rim. It’s a longer trip from the North Rim. It is possible to drive to the Colorado River at Lees Ferry (near Marble Canyon, Arizona), a 2.5 hour trip one way form the South Rim. Lees Ferry marks the OFFICIAL beginning of Grand Canyon.

North Rim

There are three developed viewpoints on the North Rim which offer a sense of looking across the expanse of the canyon rather than down into it. Views of the Colorado River are rare and distant.

Point Imperial and Cape Royal are reached via a winding scenic drive. The trip to both points, with short walks at each and several stops at pullouts along the way, can easily take half a day.

Point Imperial, the highest point on the north Rim is at 8,803 ft, overlooks the Painted Desert (which is in another listing on this site) and the eastern end of Grand Canyon.

Cape Royal provides a panorama up, down and across the canyon. It is popular for both sunrise and sunset views. the sweeping turn of the Colorado River is framed through the natural arch of Angels Window.

If you are up to putting in a bit of effort, driving a four wheel drive you can reach Point Sublime, the western most of the North Rim viewpoints. The rough, two hour (one way) trip is rewarded by a view that lives up to its name.

Make the trip to the Grand Canyon, you will not be disappointed. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the World!

For example you could ride the 3.5 mile Chapel Rocks Loop which is a spectacular loop ride around one of Sedona’s famous rock formations, featuring smooth, fast singletrack and some slickrock play area. Maybe you want to go 7 miles west of Sedona below the Mogollon Rim (did you read about that place? You might want to visit there too). This ride features scenic red rock views, a natural arch, and an ancient ruin. Easy loop with scenic views of the red rocks near Boynton Pass.

Sedona is a city besieged by tourists (which they love having). The red trails of Sedona are a mountain biking Mecca known worldwide in much the same way as <st1:country -region w:st="on">Moab</st1:country>, Utah or Fruita, Colorado. Similar to those other Mecca’s Sedona has its share of slickrock, epic daylong rides and mind-blowing scenery. Come, join in and enjoy!

9 miles north of Flagstaff on the San Francisco Peaks you will find the highest, most alpine ride in the state with view of the Grand Canyon and the north slopes of Humphreys Peak.

8 miles north of Flagstaff, in the Dry Lake Hills, is a very scenic ride on mostly sooth singletrack.

10 miles northwest of Flagstaff is a relaxing scenic cruise through pine forest and meadows with little elevation change. Your destination on this ride is a lava tube cave. This type of cavern was formed when molten lave, flowing htrough an underground passage, subsides and leaves a long tube like cave. It’s pretty neat so well worth the ride to see.

For a unique view of the Grand Canyon you may want to go whitewater rafting on the Colorado River. You will be able find a company that offers guided rafting tours who can bring your river trip to life and take you on a safe and enjoyable adventure.

Before you decide to do this you should ask yourself some serious questions like do I really want to do it? How much time do I have for the adventure? When should I go (most people book their trips during the peak season which is June – August but if you can you may consider May to early June and September since they are ideal times to see the sights without the crowds. How many people are going with you? Are you looking for a 3 day trip, 6,7,or 8 day motorized trip or the 13 day oar powered trip?

The motorized trips are most popular since they give you a time to socialize with the greatest number of people at one time. The oar powered trips are for those that want to experience their river rafting adventure up close and personal. You don’t have to be experienced to raft, you will be given instructions prior to the trip.

Take a trip, do something new and enjoy the adventure!

Petrified Forest & Painted Desert- Petrified Forest, Arizona

This national park has one of the world’s largest and most colorful concentrations of petrified wood, multi-hued badlands of the Painted Desert, historic structures, archeological sites, and displays of 225 million year old fossils. It is an awesome place to visit.

The park tells the story of human history in the area for more than 2000 years. It covers a time from the wandering families to settled agricultural villages. The story is told by potsherds, rubble and pictures on the rocks which seem to have stopped being done around 1400 AD.

There are many petroglyphs (rock paintings) in the park and date from about 1000-1350 AD. The petroglyphs are primarily geometric designs with several basic design elements appearing frequently, especially spirals and circles. Petroglyphs were made by pecking away the dark surface (desert varnish (of the rock to reveal the lighter underlying rock, generally sandstone. When you are waling around in the Petrified Forest National Park you will see some of these rock paintings, just think about the hundreds of years that have passed since they were done, it’s amazing!

The Petrified Forest is truly something that you will want to have a better understanding of. For instance, visualize a large basin area with numerous rivers and streams, a lush landscape with trees up to nine feet in diameter and towering almost two hundred feet tall, there are ferns, cycads and giant horsetails growing abundantly beside the waterways providing food and shelter for the insects, reptiles and other creatures of the area. Now visualize what happened when, 200-250 million years ago (the Triassic Period) the Colorado Plateau area of northeastern Arizona was located near the equator and on the southwestern edge of the landmass known as "Pangea". (Eventually this super-continent separated to create our present continents.) This tropical location resulted in a climate and environment very different from today.

Over time, some trees died or were washed over by floodwater or wind. The rivers carried the trees into the lowlands, breaking off branches, bark and small roots along the way. Some of these trees decomposed and disappeared, but a few trees were petrified, becoming the beautiful fossilized logs we see today.

Since petrified logs are composed of quartz, they are hard and brittle and break easily when subjected to stress.

Although you will find petrified wood in every state and in many countries the park was originally established to protect some of the largest and most beautiful concentrations of petrified wood in the world.

Today all natural and cultural resources such as petrified wood, rocks, fossils, artifacts and plants must not be disturbed or removed. It is the goal to retain the beauty for years and generations to come. Yet, thoughtless visitors continue to steal over one ton each month. What a shame they can’t just admire, study and enjoy it without having to destroy the future.

The Painted Desert is an arid land that was created when an uplift created stresses that raised this portion of the land above sea level and caused the stresses that cracked the giant logs that were buried in the sediment from the flooding of years before. Now the petrified logs and fossilized animal and plant remains are exposed to the land’s surface the Painted desert has it present sculptured form.

The Painted Desert is actually a narrow, crescent shaped arc, about 160 miles long which begins about 30 miles north of Cameron and swings southeast just beyond the Petrified Forest National Park. This arc varies in width from 10 miles wide in the Cameron are to about 35 miles wide at Petrified Forest. The Little Colorado River cradles the southern edge and the tableland of Hopi Mesas and buttes make up the northern boundary.

Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) – Flagstaff, Arizona

This ancient Meso-American holiday is held throughout Mexico, Latin America and the Southwestern US. The Museum of Northern Arizona puts on the celebration in the Flagstaff area. Dia de los Muertos is the transforming of grief into celebration. The ritual pays homage to the lives of lost loved ones by inviting them back to enjoy their favorite music and foods and to honor their contribution in life.

The families of Flagstaff families bring ofrendas (altars) from their homes to share in a courtyard exhibit illuminated by candles and luminaries. You will be able to learn how Day of the Dead traditions evolved and the meaning behind the objects on the ofrendas.

During the celebration people don wooden skull masks called calacas and dance in honor of their deceased relatives. The wooden skulls are also placed on altars that are dedicated to the dead. Sugar skulls, made with the names of the dead person on the forehead, are eaten by a relative or friend.

The Aztecs and other Meso-American civilizations kept skulls as trophies and displayed them during the ritual. The skulls were used to symbolize death and rebirth.

The skulls were used to honor the dead, whom the Aztecs and other Meso-American civilizations believed came back to visit during the month long ritual.

Unlike the Spaniards, who viewed death as the end of life, the natives viewed it as the continuation of life. Instead of fearing death, they embraced it. To them, life was a dream and only in death did they become truly awake.

Check with the University of Northern Arizona for exact dates for the celbration and then put it on your calendar!

The John Wesley Powell Memorial Museum is located in Page, Arizona at #6 N. Lake Powell Blvd, on the corner of N. Lake Powell Boulevard and North Navajo Drive. The goal of the John Wesley Powell Memorial Museum is to preserve the history surrounding Major John Wesley Powell and the exploration he did of the Colorado River. The museum also strives to document the history of the Page area, and to provide information about the local Native American people. This is currently the only history museum located in Page, Arizona. The museum is a private, non-profit organization that raises money with the Visitor Information Center located on the premises.

The museum contains many interesting pieces of the historic life of John Wesley Powell. There are sketches, photographs and memorabilia from his two journeys down the Colorado River. Major Powell accomplished a lot during his lifetime, and his interest in natural phenomena lead to his amazing trips and discoveries. This one-armed Civil War hero had a desire to go the Grand Canyon, which had been created by the Colorado River. Browsing through the museum, visitors can get a feel for the scope of his achievements by visiting the museum and learning more about his life. Located in front of the museum is a replica of the boat that Major Powell used on his river trip. The replica was used in the Disney movie, "Ten Who Dared."

Other exhibits in the museum include a collection of Native American artifacts, and items from early pioneer times. There is information on the local geology, and how the Colorado River cut the canyons. The history of Page can also be found in the John Wesley Powell Memorial Museum. The history of Page is filled with interesting facts that you will be able to learn about at the museum. The museum staff will be happy to show visitors films about Lake Powell and nearby Glen Canyon dam construction for those who are interested in learning more about these subjects.

Visitors to the museum can also go into the bookstore, which features many different books, maps, art and historical interest items for sale. Gifts can also be purchased. In addition, the museum is home to the area Visitor’s Information Center for Page, Arizona. By using these services, you are supporting the museum. You can find out more about other area attractions such as Antelope Canyon and Alstrom Point, and local accommodations, as well as being able to book houseboats and scenic flights there.

The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Admission prices are $5 for people ages 13 to 61, $3 for those age 62 and older, $1 for children ages 5 to 12, and children under the age of five are admitted to the museum free, as are museum members.

Sedona Valley – Sedona, Arizona

Sedona, Arizona is one of those places that everyone has heard about, and most everyone wants to visit this city at one time or another. Sedona has the honor of being one of the most photographed places in the state because of the natural beauty of the area. This small town actually attracts as many as four million visitors a year! One of the reasons for that is that Sedona has what many consider to be the perfect location. It is in Arizona’s famed red rock country, at the mouth of Oak Creek Canyon, which is a mere two hours north of the bustling metropolis of Phoenix. One of the best things about Sedona is that because of the elevation, it is blessed with a milder climate than other parts of the state of Arizona.

Sedona has a varied and interesting history. Some of the prehistoric residents of the area, the Anasazi, left their cliff dwellings and petroglyphs as a reminder of their time in what is now known as Sedona. Visitors often go to Montezuma Castle, which is a well preserved Sinaguan ruin that can be viewed by tourists.

Sedona has also been featured by the rich and famous. The well-known writer, Zane Grey, lived in Arizona and Sedona is mentioned in a number of his books. Sedona has also been a popular backdrop for many movies, from the early 20s to the current time. The rich and famous, including Lucille Ball and Walt Disney, have also been known to make Sedona their home. It is not uncommon to see a celebrity or two strolling the streets of Sedona along with the tourists.

Sedona offers a wide range of things to see and do. In addition to the natural attractions, Sedona is a thriving art community with many galleries. There are often cultural activities that include music, art and theatrical productions. Sedona has lots of great shops, excellent dining choices, etc. The town is also known as a vortex, which is a mystical place of great power, and many people visit Sedona for its spiritual connections related to these vortexes.

The most popular time to visit Sedona is in the spring and fall. Summer temperatures can get up into the 90s, while winter temperatures can drop to around freezing. The easiest time to find accommodations is in the winter and during the summer weekdays, however, it is suggested that you make advance reservations no matter what time of year you decide to visit! There are so many different accommodation choices that it is easy to find something that suits your tastes.

Sedona offers a wide range of activities for visitors. One way to find out about many of them ahead of time is to go to Sedona Arizona: Visit Sedona – Visitor, Tourism, Relocation and Media Information or call 1-800-288-7336. You can get a visitor’s guide and purchase a Sedona SuperPass which allows you to get free admission to some activities and attractions, and discounts at many shops and places to eat.

SEDONA NEW AGE CENTER – Sedona, Arizona

After any time spent at the Sedona New Age Center, you will feel enlightened, having engaged yourself in any number of new age remedies. You willll be filled with peace and high energy, having experienced any of the exciting new age treatments that are offered, in addition to tours, lectures, seminars, and channelings.

The creators of the Sedona New Age Center feel they were specifically guided to the site of the New Age Center because it was once used as a ceremonial site by ancient people, and being that Sedona is the center of the New Age movement, it all comes together very nicely. The director of the center, Anita Dalton, created the Sedona New Age Center with a focus on higher-consciousness, as its focus is on many different ideas from alternative medicine to goddess worship.

The Sedona New Age Center employs several psychics and healers. This talented stuff includes clairvoyants, pet psychics, tarot card readers, hypnotherapists, palm readers, Reiki masters and teachers, and psychic empaths focusing on relationships. Tarot cards and hypnotherapy are used in some of these areas as well. Each of these individuals are trained in their particular area, and some are trained in multiple different areas.

Perhaps one of the most exciting things to experience at the Center is an aura photo reading. In the Aura Photo room, special biofeedback probes will find your energy, and display it on the picture as different colors going around your body, reflecting how you are feeling physically and emotionally. The aura will also sometimes show the deceased people in a person’s life, as well as new pregnancies.

There are four vortexes of energy located in Sedona, causing it to be thought of as a spiritual power center. The energy emanating from these sources interacts with the energy emanating from people, and strengthens the inner being. This can have a positive effect on the people that experience it for many days after. Vortex tours are offered at the Sedona New Age Center, where you can experience such things as drumming circles, sacred chanting, laying of hands healing, and sacred eagle feather blessing.

The Sedona New Age Center has a store in which you can purchase personalized reports in many different areas of Astrology and Numerology, such as New Age Natal, Astrological Solar Return, Karmic Past Life, and Full Numerology Personal Profile. There are also many items available for gifts or personal use, such as books, CDs, crystals, gems, jewelry, and sculptures.

Special events are held at the Center every day, in the way of workshops, clinics, readings and special messages. The workshops that are offered include Reading the Stone and even a special three-day workshop. There are several different clinics with such subjects as Chakra Balancing and Energy. Other events include Chakra Awakening, Healing the Inner Child, and The SoulMate Prayer. Contact the Center for times and days of the events.

Sedona Heritage Museum – Sedona, Arizona

There’s some confusion as to just when the city of Sedona was begun in Arizona, making it a very good reason to visit the Sedona Heritage Museum. Yet other than providing answers to some of the more important answers surrounding Sedona’s history, there’s also a museum holding many important artifacts, special events and learning opportunities, a store, and a facility to rent to hold weddings and other special meetings and events.

It’s hard to tell exactly when Sedona was begun, whether it was when the red rocks were formed, or when the Native Americans came to the area. Regardless, Sedona Heritage Museum focuses between 1870 to 1950. The very first industry then was fruit, peaches and apples, and the next big industry became movies, with over seventy-five filmed in the area. T.C. Schnebly owned about eighty acres around the turn of the century, and also owned a hotel and general store. The town was named after his wife, Sedona. The name is neither Spanish nor Native American, but one that Sedona Schnebly’s mother had made up, as she thought it sounded pretty.

Arriving at Sedona Heritage Museum, you’ll have to pass through those famous fruit orchards after you park. You’ll also get the chance to see some vintage farm implements up close on your way to the door. What was once the farm home of Walter and Ruth Jordan is now the main museum building. In it, you’ll learn about Sedona pioneers, as the family’s original one-room cabin is contained inside the farm home. Also inside is a tribute to the Western movies made in Sedona and a US Forest Service Exhibit.

A two-hour educational program is available to local school children, and while it’s provided for free, space is limited, so only one group per month is permitted from January until June. The kids will participate in biscuit and bread making, branding demonstrations, and washing laundry by hand. In addition, they’ll learn about cowboys, Western movies, apple grinding, and the early settlers of Sedona. Since area fourth graders have a local history curriculum, there is a special program designed just for them.

There are many special events at the Sedona Heritage Museum, with many of them repeating monthly. Voices of the Verde has a local actor providing a fifty minute presentation utilizing humor, songs, cowboy poetry, and a historical narrative. Other programs include Woodworking, Zane Gray Brings Hollywood to Arizona, and Red Rock Quilters.

Group discounts are provided for groups of ten or more, and guided tours are available with a reservation. If arranged for beforehand, box or catered lunches can be available and waiting for your group at the appropriate time. For special events, there are tables and seating for over one hundred, as well as a PA system and stage. Being in a city park, there is no alcohol allowed and nothing is available after dark.

Sedona Heritage Museum is open daily from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M., and admission is $3.00. Email or phone to make arrangements for a group tour. Memberships to the Museum are available from $40 to $200 for a personal membership and $100 to $500 for business.
