Do you remember the Singing Cowboy, Rex Allen? He was the star of many western movies and on television. He grew up in Willcox, Arizona on a ranch in Mud Springs Canyon, forty miles from Willcox. He starred as himself in 19 western movies. He was one of the top ten box office draws of the day. He personified the clean cut, God-fearing American hero of the wild west, he rode a horse named KoKo and had a sidekick known to many for his varied rolls, his name was Buddy Ebsen who played Slim Pickens.
Rex Allen had a varied and interesting career, from making movies and singing to working for the legendary Walt Disney.
Rex Allen died in 1999 in Tucson. His ashes were scattered near the Rex Allen Museum in Willcox where most of his memorabilia is on display.
The museum is located in downtown Willcox on historic Railroad Ave. Not only are things of the Rex Allen collection on display but there is also local history and displays of other western stars.
There is the annual Rex Allen Days Celebration held in Willcox the first weekend in October. You will enjoy this for a bit of cowboy history and music!
